Assistant Director, Policy Communications

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (www.asco.org) is seeking a proven communications  professional with a background of knowledge and experience in high profile legislative and health  policy issues.  ASCO is an international non-profit organization representing more than 27,000 oncology professionals who are focused on caring for patients with cancer.  The Assistant Director is strategically and operationally responsible for guiding ASCO's policy communications and related media relations programs, and the management of staff and vendors who support the programs.

Key responsibilities:

--Provide daily operational direction for ASCO's policy communications programs and collaboration with four major divisions of the Cancer Policy department: government and state affiliate relations; practice management; research policy; and quality of care

--Develop and implement internal and external communications strategies around complex, public policy issues to ensure policy communications support the goal of positioning ASCO as the authoritative public voice on cancer policy

--Provide operational management including budgeting and managing resources, developing timelines, establishing and implementing appropriate policies, processes, procedures, and the coordination/integration with ASCO's public relations firm's activities

--Manage staff, including managers, to their fullest potential

Qualifications include:

--8+ years of related communications experience to include media relations and strategy development

--Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Health Policy or related field

--Demonstrated success in directing public affairs programs and in creating and executing strategic communications to meet priorities and positioning goals

--Understanding of and/or experience working in a professional medical society or non-profit environment desirable

--Proven track record of successful staff and team management including coaching and development

--Competence as a hands-on leader with a strong work ethic, a style of openness and collaboration, high energy and a proactive and results-oriented focus
