About the District:
The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD), created by voters in 1959, is responsible for managing and safeguarding two of the most utilized groundwater basins in Southern California. These basins provide nearly 40 percent of the total groundwater demand used by nearly four million people living in 43 cities in southern Los Angeles County.
About the Position:
The Communications Specialist is responsible for performing skilled, professional tasks in the development, implementation and administration of District-wide public affairs, public education, community outreach, conservation and media relations programs, plans and strategies to meet designated District public relations goals and objectives. A Communications Specialist is also responsible for developing press releases, planning, organizing and executing public relations, media relations, community outreach, special and/or media events and represents the District in a wide variety of public interactions.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in public relations, community affairs and advertising programs; excellent writing skills, methods and techniques of graphic design, layout and print production and photography; desktop publishing applications used in the preparation of print and graphic materials; and advertising and public relations industry practices and trends.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduate from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in public relations, communications, business or public administration or a closely related field (Masters Degree or substantial progress toward completion preferred). Five years of progressively responsible professional experience involving the development and coordination of public affairs and community outreach programs and projects similar to those administered by the District.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; effectively edit written materials; create effective graphic designs and creative approaches for use in public information and education programs; interpret information and situations and make recommendations in accordance with applicable policies, regulations and guidelines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; make sound independent judgments within established guidelines; multitask and prioritize effectively; maintain accurate files and records; ability to speak, read and write Spanish or other language desirable.
