Fewer than four in 10 D.C. executives have worked on Capitol Hill, and fewer than one in four has any executive branch experience, according to a new study from the Public Affairs Council that was cited in CQ-Roll Call, CQ Weekly and K Street Cafe.
This, even though high-level experience with Congress or federal agencies has long been considered the stepping-stone to a top corporate job in Washington D.C., particularly in advocacy or public relations.
The study, "The Corporate Washington Office Benchmarking Project," surveyed 80 top corporate public affairs executives and found that fewer than three in 10 had legislative branch experence.
"Being a career congressional staffer, even at a senior level, may get you a job in a contract lobbying firm or a trade association, but you're less likely to get a senior-level position with a company," Council President Doug Pinkham told CQ-Roll Call.
