Corporate Citizenship a Strategic Imperative for UPS

Senior management buy-in is imperative for corporate sustainability initiatives to be effective. CFOs, however, tend to be more concerned about quarterly profits than their company's sustainability programs. Not so at UPS, where Kurt Kuehn looks at long-term strategic growth and the role sustainability plays in financial stability. In an article in the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship's magazine, The Corporate Citizen, Kuehn says "that in today's business environment, long-term growth cannot be separated from issues of economic, social and environmental policies." He further shares five reasons CFOs should care about sustainability initiatives as they can:

1. Cut costs and enhance efficiency

2. Mitigate risks

3. Open up new competitive and revenue opportunitites

4. Drive innovation

5. Improve employee recruiting, development and retention
